guiltypleasures - lovestories (2009)

i usually have a story or two on how i came across an album that i wish the world could hear but i can't for the life of me figure out how i fell in love with the band guiltypleasures. but it doesn't matter because i'm here to make you fall in love with them, too. thank me later.
a quartet from maryland consisting of vocalists sol edler, mycah chevalier, jerrica white and bassist/songwriter rick white, guiltypleasures play tag team within 10 songs of love, regret, fear, infidelity, jealousy, lust and appreciation. with a touch of jazz, a hint of go-go (shout out to the dmv) along with funk, r&b and soul, it's a complete album with meaningful lyrics and just enough sin to put you in the mood to light some candles, chill some wine and put that bottle of black currant vanilla massage oil to use. again, thank me later.
I honestly can't pick a favorite which means the entire album is worth leaving on repeat but i'm certain the sensual "anticipation" featuring mycah chevalier and sol edler will resonate with more than a few of you. there's hints of atlantic starr, incognito and raphael saadiq on this album but it's all just a guilty pleasure.

cherokee - i love you...me (1999)

a brooklyn born, harlem raised artist with a sultry and jazzy tone, cherokee is a vocalist and songwriter with a testimony similar to many artists who suffered from the disasters of record labels: signed a deal and released an album,  gained notoriety and industry buzz, began a new project, label folded and the project is left on the shelf, signed a new deal with a new label, work with incredible artist like bilal, jill scott and outkast, new label folds and the new album still doesn't make it off the shelf.
her debut caught my attention years ago when i watched her perform "stepping stone" on a tv program which was hosted by montell jordan (can someone remind me the name of that show, please?) and i was impressed. rumor has it that the premise of the album is based on the abusive marriage she was in for a number of years. if there's any truth to that,  it certainly explains the darkness behind the 1st track "while i'm flying" which questions why she's surrounded by flowers and why everyone is crying while looking over her body. "stepping stone" is the wake up call of a victim of a horrible relationship who finally understands her worth and "blue bottle afta shave" tells of the weakness from the scent of a man. but my favorite track is "fictiously"; a jazz infused, smoke filled lounge vibe of a song which tells of the need for the dream to be the reality.
though the 2nd album was never commercially released, cherokee has been working on new music, some of which is on her reverbnation page. no set date on the release of a full album but i'm already a fan of her new material.
